Noun [Venetic]

Forms: klovetlo [romanization], ablative? [romanization]
Etymology: Disputed. * Perhaps from the Proto-Indo-European *αΈ±lew- and suffixed with *-tlom. The linguist Michael Weiss suggested that the term may derive from the affixation of *-tlom to a Proto-Indo-European causative form *αΈ±lowΓ©yeti. This, according to Weiss, would have produced Proto-Italic *klowejetlom. If this theory is accepted, then the Venetic term may mean something akin to "place for causing the gods to hear." However, Weiss has since retracted this theory and instead argues for a pre-form *αΈ±lewetlom, which may mean something akin to "place where one hears the gods." * PrΓ³sper argues for a derivation from *αΈ±lowetlom, from *αΈ±lewH- (β€œclean”), whence also perhaps Latin cloāca (β€œsewer”). According to this theory, the term may mean something akin to "place of purification." This idea of ritual cleansing may itself be connected to the Roman lΕ«strātiō and the goddess CloācΔ«na. Nevertheless, PrΓ³sper notes that these theories require Venetic to have not developed from *-tlom into *-klom, unlike all other Italic languages.
